Tomi’s work in ceramics has been one of bridging worlds. By melding the rich heritage of Korean ceramic tradition with the innovative spirit of American artistry, he seeks to create a dialogue between his two identities.
This journey has led him back to his birthplace, via a 3 year apprenticeship under onggi buncheong master, Kwak Kyung Tae. Onggi is a Korean earthenware technique that has remained largely unchanged since its origins in 5000 BCE. It is a tradition preserved through the intimate lineage of master and apprentice, passed down hand to hand.
In returning to the source, Tomi longs to awaken a cultural memory while infusing them with his own contemporary voice.
